Each year, juniors from Fannin County High School in Georgia, Copper Basin High School in Tennessee, and Hiwassee Dam High School in North Carolina are encouraged to participate in the Washington Youth Tour short-story contest sponsored by Tri-State EMC. Students are asked to write a short story about electric cooperatives and their role in the community. One student is selected from each of the three participating schools to earn a week in our nation’s capital.
While there, students visit some of the national monuments, including the Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as well as the White House. Students are also given a personal VIP tour of the Capitol.
The Washington Youth Tour is both an educational and memorable adventure for students. It allows them to witness firsthand the role of our nation’s government and to learn about the importance of electric cooperatives throughout the United States.
